What are Veneers?
Thursday, October 21, 2010
Do you have discoloured, chipped, broken, widely spaced, or misshapen teeth? You might want to improve your smile with laminate veneers.
Veneers are thin layers of tooth-like material, applied to the front of a tooth’s surface using strong adhesive cement. Since they are shaped like your tooth, veneers can create a natural, beautiful smile.
Veneers can be used to:
•Improve the appearance of your teeth: If your teeth are stained, discolored or otherwise not looking their best, veneers can quickly improve your smile.
•Protect damaged teeth from further harm: If your teeth have been damaged or have decayed over time, veneers can cover up the damaged tooth and protect it. But, if the damage and decay is too severe, a crown might be needed to protect the tooth. Crowns cover an entire tooth, while veneers only cover a tooth’s surface.
•Create a straighter smile: If your teeth are not well aligned, veneers can straighten the appearance of your teeth without the full treatment involved with braces or other orthodontic procedures. (Note: Veneers are not always the ideal answer to straighten your teeth. Depending on the degree of re-alignment, veneers alone might not achieve the best results. Consult your dentist to determine which alignment option is best for you.)
•Provide uniform shape, size, and symmetry: If your teeth are different shapes and sizes with gaps that cannot easily be closed with orthodontic work, veneers might be the answer. They can give you that symmetric, consistent-looking smile you always wanted.
How long will my veneers last?
Veneers are a long-term investment in the appearance of your teeth. If you take care of them properly, they should last for many years – they are almost as durable as real teeth. If your veneers chip or fracture, they can usually be repaired without having to go to the full expense of replacement.
More than ever before, veneers and other cosmetic dentistry treatments are making it possible for people to repair, enhance, or create an entirely new smile that allows them to present their best face to the world.
